As Google Voice becomes more accessible and more popular to use, you may have noticed an increased demand for the Google VoIP phone. Don’t feel left out if you don’t know anything about it except that it is in high demand, because it does not exactly exist. Alas, convenient though it may be to access Google Voice through a ready-made device, the Google VoIP phone is but a myth – still just a possibility somewhere on the far horizon.
Google does have its own phone line, featuring multiple generations of the Nexus phone. However, it is a smart phone which runs off of Google’s Android operating system and requires a cell phone plan and a SIM card to operate. However, you can – in a sense – create your own.
Google Voice is a fairly recent VoIP project that allows users to make phone calls and send messages through a special Google number. It has many benefits, which include the ability to retain your local area code, save a log of all calls placed or received and forward messages to voicemail (which may be then sent back to you in the form of text messages). You can set up a softphone system using Google Voice and a headset.
Of course, if you are genuinely interested in possessing an actual Google VoIP phone, you should probably stay on the lookout for the real deal. One way to check is to just visit the Google homepage regularly. When Google releases new products (such as their Nexus phones) they frequently display them on their homepage for at least a day – and sometimes more. If there is a release of a Google VoIP phone, it will probably be on the front page. The easiest way to do this is probably to set the Google page as your default homepage. This way, every time you open your browser, you can check if there is a release.
Reading the tech section of your online news is also a good way. Often, Google announces its products in advance, at an electronics show, and someone will cover the release in a news article. Scanning the tech news every now and then should help you stay informed about any developments regarding a Google VoIP phone. Just because there isn’t a Google VoIP phone right now doesn’t mean there won’t be one in the future.
For the meantime, enjoy your makeshift Google VoIP softphone. It may not be exactly what everyone is looking for, but it gets the job done – and, it leaves your hands free. And, when you hear people talking about how much they wish they had one of the phones, just smile to yourself – because in a way, you already do. You probably got it at a decent price and with just a little innovation, too. There’s a lot to be said for creating your own solutions to impossible tasks.
